I saw a tourist doing that last week. Just walked over and started drinking. Right in town where there is all that algae crap. Doesn’t look healthy.
But then again, I’ve drunk the water out at Glenorchy. Crystal clear and coming straight off the mountains. Nothing wrong with that. It all depends where you drink. A fast flowing, cold place which is basically just snow-melt is fine. A shallower place (like Frankton) or somewhere with obvious algae, mud, or near to boats (diesel) probably isn’t very wise to drink.
Drinking fresh water from a stream is amazing, but you have to be careful. In some places there are cattle or fertilizers too which foul it very quickly.
