Never been to the South Rim, but the North is much less crowded, 1000 feet higher, has a cooler/more alpine climate, lots of trees, and I saw a herd of buffalo in the meadows by the entrance, so I’d say it’s worth the detour. It’s also right near the Vermilion Cliffs and Marble Canyon (which carries the Colorado from Glen Canyon), which are spectacular by themselves. Page, AZ is also nearby and has some famous sights (Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell).
