The Red River Gorge is known by rock climbers around the world. Locally, the issue is with oil companies who have purchased mineral rights in some areas, and flat out purchased the land in others, and see climbers as a nuisance. The reality for locals is that they’re already well into the 2nd phase of oil extraction (pumping water into the wells to force out more oil.) In not that long, the oil companies will be gone as the oil wells will be dry. But climbers, campers, mountain bikers, hikers and other recreational users will be coming for decades if the land is well taken care of.
In several areas, climbers have banded together and flat-out purchased parcels of land themselves to care for and to keep them open to climbing and other non-motorized recreation. One example is [Muir Valley](http://www.muirvalley.com/photos.html) south of Rogers.
