I can truthfully say it is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been. Also, people are fantastically friendly and welcoming to tourists.
I cheated– I did not do it solo. I went on a guided adventure tour (I went with Intrepid, but there are several carriers that do the same routes). Basically, I threw a bunch of money at them and they took me places.
The typical setup for these tours is that they give you a safari truck, a driver, a cook, and a guide. The truck comes with camping gear and kitchen stuff. The cook provisions the truck and plans meals. The driver gets you places. The guide tells you about stuff that you may want to do.
But the passengers are largely responsible for their own experience: meaning pitch and break your own camping gear, break into teams to cook, wash up, and clean up the truck, and decide how much of what the guide points you at you want to do. I found the experience to be more fun than DIY travel. I am still in touch with several folks from the trip.
A decent loop of Namibia and maybe Botswana takes about 3 weeks.
