He thought the idea whereas 1000s of climbers did not. At the time in April of 2006 it wasn’t against the law. It just wasn’t done because of wink wink nudge nudge gentlemans agreement with NPS.
Clint Eastwood climbed the Totem Pole when Eiger Sanction was filmed. See Alpinist 10 for a most excellent write up on the climb. That was another controversial climb due to the mysticism of the few. It’s been 40 years and people are still sore.
Be angry at Boy Scouts trundling million year old boulders in Mushroom State Park.
Be angry at Boy Scouts letting a campfire get out of control and burning the northern crags in Red River Gorge, KY.
Be angry at the Jeep courses all across the country that are wrecking havoc on the deep wilderness.
Be angry at the oil drilling all across the country that are wrecking havoc on the deep wilderness.
Dean made that jump a bunch of times before. What variable changed this time? We will never know. Yes, the speed freaks day always comes. Sean Leary and Steph Davis’s husband met their makers the same way and a lot more low profile people that the media covers only as local news. It’s a damn shame that the limit has to be pushed that far.
Dean changed my life in 2006 when he climbed Delicate Arch and then spoke on NPR about it. I wouldn’t be married with the most beautiful 3yr old child if I hadn’t decided on going to Arches and Yosemite for that summer to “follow his footsteps”. I’m just a small grasshopper climber in the big field but that small pebble changed the course of my great river and my heart hurts that humanity lost a most excellent person.
Sorry. Didn’t mean to get all verbose sappy. 🙂
