It’s not that bad if you go in the (southern hemisphere) summer. I went in November and we did have to be ready for all 4 seasons during our 5 day long hike through Torres del Paine park (the w-circuit hike – takes you right by the mountains in the image), but it wasn’t that bad. Some days we were walking in shorts and t-shirt, but on others we had to layer up and put on winter touques and gloves and stuff. Slept in a tent and it was cold at night – but a decent sleeping bag takes care of that.
All in all the climate should not prevent you from going on a trip there – unless you go in the winter, which you shouldn’t. (unless you have a very good reason to)
